WGU streamlines the application process by providing a complimentary transcript service. When you apply to WGU, you have the option to utilize this handy service, enabling us to collect and submit your official transcripts from participating institutions for you. For transcripts not processed via our complimentary service, please ensure they are dispatched directly to WGU from your prior college or university. Note that transcripts sent by fax or email from individuals will not be deemed official.

1. Submitting Transcripts TO WGU (For Applicants)

Complimentary Transcript Service:
- Opt-in during application.
- WGU collects transcripts from participating institutions at no cost.

Self-Submission (If not using complimentary service):
- Must be sent DIRECTLY from previous institution(s).
- NO FAX.
- NO EMAIL from anyone other than the institution.

**2. Requesting Transcripts FROM WGU (For Current/Former Students)**

Reasons you might need them:

Transitioning to another university.
Applying for higher degrees.
Proof of degree/credits for employment. (Small icons: Graduation cap, briefcase, university building)

How to Request Official WGU Transcripts:

Online (Recommended):
- WGU Student Portal: Navigate to Records under Student Support > Request an Official Transcript.
- Direct Link: If portal access is unavailable, visit the WGU NSC Storefront.
- Delivery Options: Electronic, Same-Day Express, Mail.

By Mail:
- Utilize the Transcript Mail-in Form (from WGU Transcript Request student handbook).
- Include: Your Name (and other names used), Last year attended/graduated, SSN, Current mailing address, Email, Phone.
- SIGNATURE REQUIRED!
- Include recipient’s name/address if mailing to someone else.
- Payment: Checks/Money orders payable to Western Governors University.
- Mail to: Western Governors University ATTN: Records Department 4001 South 700 East, Suite 300 Salt Lake City, UT 84107-2533

3. Understanding WGU Transcript Types

WGU provides two types: Official & Unofficial for both.

1. Academic Transcript:
- Definition: Comprehensive record of attempted and verified learning.
- Contains: All courses (passed & failed), competency units, certifications, honors/awards, degrees conferred.
- Best for: Other higher education institutions (traditional official transcript).
- GPA Statement: “Western Governors University and its state affiliates do not calculate a grade point average (GPA) or class rank.”

2. Record of Achievement Transcript (ROAT):
- Definition: Comprehensive record of verified learning.
- Contains: ONLY completed coursework (courses passed), certifications, honors/awards, degrees conferred.
- Best for: Employers, licensing bodies, and other interested parties.
- GPA Statement: “GPA: This student completed each of the listed courses with a GPA between 3.0 and 4.0 on a 4.0-scale.”

4. Appealing the Transcript Requirement (For Applicants)

When an exclusion may be granted:

Undergraduate: If prior coursework is not applicable/transferable to your WGU program.
- Submit unofficial transcript(s) for verification.
- Excludes: Non-transferable certifications (e.g., professional development).

When an exclusion will NOT be granted:

Military Benefits: All military transcripts (AARTS, SMARTS, CCAF, CIG) MUST be submitted.

Graduate Programs requiring Content Evaluation: All official transcripts with prior college-level academic coursework MUST be submitted.

Graduate Programs for Degree Verification Only: Proof of undergraduate degree is needed; exclusion appeal not necessary.

Important Note:

Your Responsibility: Disclose and submit ALL prior college-level academic history.
Consequences of Failure: May impact financial aid, military benefits, and transfer credits.
